where are your fave Jack points on a 156

Postby KGSparks on Thu Jul 08, 2010 1:27 pm

I have seen a few pics of the undertray of a 156, and there are not a lot of places to lift these cars up without damaging things.

To all those who have put a jack under their car for anything more than a tyre change... where do you find it best to position the jack and then the jack stands... (yes i know it has a jack point, but you can't have both devices in the same place at the same time ;) )

Doing an oil change and then some suspension work so need to jack up the whole front end, so I would love to hear tales of jack point mastery ... or disastery...

Hi

I have a good pic with all the jacking points marked, but I can never post photos correctly on this forum. Yes, user error, not blaming the board. I'll just PM you with it, if you want to post it afterwards then be my guest!

ok, assume u want to save the 4 rounded jacking points for your axle stands....

front:

The suspension is the obvious choice, the lower wishbone (black) with it's knuckle and base plate is ok to jack on with a trolley jack. Alternatively, use the stock scissors jack on the pinch seam if you want to change a wheel or similar...

back:

no jacking on the obviously aluminium crossmember, but again the suspension points are ok, especially again the knuckle joint with the trailing arm.

I can pass on photos of the undertray marked when i get home...

I never did put my old 156 on stands, but I presume it's the same as the GT.

What I do is:
1. use a scissor jack in the factory jack point to raise the car slightly, enough to slide my hydraulic jack under the car
2. use the hydraulic on one of the major suspension points (eg: wishbone bolt area) to lift it up high
3. remove the scissor jack and put the axle stand under the factory jack point; then gently lower the car onto the stand

If the factory jack point doesn't look robust enough, I simply find another.

Good post.

Where your 'yellow arrows' are, I used the equivalent spot on my 155. It's not super strong steel, and has been squashed. :P I believe they are 'hook' points for the chassis; for example, if the car is transported on a truck or ship, they use chains and hooks to lock into those 'eyes'. Still ok for axle stands, but the wishbone/suspension points are stronger.
